A Taste of Freedom Tour

Morning:

9:00 AM: Departure and visit to the 1763 Monument depicting ‘Cuffy,’ who led the first slave uprising.

9:45 AM: Visit to the 1823 Rebellion Monument. Your guide will provide historical context about the rebellion and the roles of the church and abolitionists in the slaves’ emancipation.

10:30 AM: Journey along the Eastern Coast, with a stop at Cove and John for refreshing cane juice and local snacks.

11:15 AM: Visit the village of Victoria, the first village in Guyana purchased by freed ex-slaves.

12:00 PM: Visit the site of the Buxton Train station to view the spot where freed female ex-slaves stopped the train to protest high taxes. Meet Auntie Gloria, a 3rd-generation herbalist, and granddaughter of one of the protesting women.

Afternoon:

1:00 PM: Travel to Beterverwagting to view the monument commemorating the ex-slaves’ achievement in purchasing their village.

1:45 PM: Arrive at the Secret Garden.

2:00 PM: Participate in a hands-on cooking session, preparing traditional dishes: Cook-Up rice, Metemgee with pumpkin dumplings, fried fish, and Conkee (coconut dessert).

3:30 PM: Engage in an African drumming class led by Chef Eon, learning the basics of African rhythms.

5:00 PM: The tour concludes.
